What is a force main?

A force main is a type of pressurized pipe used to transport wastewater from a pump station to a treatment facility. It is called a force main because it relies on pumps to push the wastewater through the pipe, as opposed to gravity, which is how most sewer pipes operate.

Force mains are typically made of materials such as ductile iron, PVC, or HDPE, and are designed to withstand the high pressures generated by the pumping system. They are often buried underground to protect them from environmental factors and prevent leaks or breaks.

Force mains play a crucial role in wastewater collection and transportation systems, allowing for the efficient movement of sewage to treatment plants. However, they can also be prone to clogs, leaks, and other issues that require regular maintenance and inspection to ensure they function properly.
